If you can get past this hump and people get on a roll, you're going to do well.

Personally I like to know a little of the mechanics on how things work. We don't need the details of every roll per se, but like you said it's nice to know how "heroic" we're supposed to be. Do we have 3 hit points or 200?C.D. I know we can now "level up" one of our survivors, but I think it'd be great if the next session also involved a 3 new characters to funnel, as support for our one good character. The players are still forming a play style for their characters (and in some cases don't even know if they like their character), and they don't know much about the world, so jumping in with complicated ideas, usually results in disaster.

I follow three rules for my first sessions, and they most often work --
1. Keep it fucking simple - no lengthy exposition, and no more than one encounter.
2. Keep the focus on the characters interacting with each other - no extraneous npcs.
3. Some type of ongoing mystery - even if the players burn down the place where the answers could've be found.

Afterwards I can assess how everyone plays their character, and prep games based around what I know from there.John Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05940190831705865182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3188833949555515251.post-37745473426056058792014-09-30T11:05:46.681-04:002014-09-30T11:05:46.681-04:00Thank you!
